The administration of pure oxygen at higher than atmospheric pressure (hyperbaric oxygen) has been found useful as a primary method of treatment or as adjunctive therapy in a variety of disorders.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is breathing 100 % oxygen while under increased atmospheric pressure. It is used in conventional treatment for decompression sickness; severe carbon monoxide poisoning; certain kinds of wounds, injuries, and skin infections; delayed radiation injury; and certain bone or brain infections. Decompression sickness, commonly known as" the bends", is an extremely painful and potentially dangerous condition that strikes deep sea divers who surface too quickly and, occasionally, miners and tunnel builders who come up too rapidly. It can also affect fighter pilots who climb very quickly.
While some of the mechanisms of action of HBOT, as they apply to healing and reversal of symptoms, are yet to be discovered, it is known that HBOT:
» greatly increases oxygen concentration in all body tissues, even with reduced or blocked blood flow;
» stimulates the growth of new blood vessels to locations with reduced circulation, improving blood flow to areas with arterial blockage;
» causes a rebound in arterial dilation after HBOT, resulting in an increased blood vessel diameter greater than when therapy began, improving blood flow to compromised organs;
» stimulates an adaptive increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of the body's principal, internally produced antioxidants and free radical scavengers; and,
» aids the treatment of infection by enhancing white blood cell action and potentiating germ-killing antibiotics.
» although studies are still ongoing HBOT also shows great promise in treating and curing cancer and other diseases including chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, sports injuries, multiple sclerosis, autism, stroke, cerebral palsy, senility, cirrhosis, lyme disease, Aids, and gastrointestinal ulcers.
Actually, everyone’s everyday lives will generally be healthier with a little bit of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The therapy usually lasts for about an hour and leaves one feeling fresh and revitalizes, the treatment boosts energy levels; improves sleep patterns; promotes healing; strengthens the immune system; increases concentration and alertness; improves one’s memory; enhances the body’s intake of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients; eliminates body toxins as well as eases migraines, headaches, and hangovers. Moreover, it also contributes in increasing the...
