The health of our hair is generally a strong indicator of our inner health. Hair health and attractiveness is also influenced by heredity, hormonal rhythms, stress and environmental conditions.
Naturally hair follows three cyclic phases – a growth period (anagen phase), a transitional period or degradation period (catagen phase) and then by a resting period (telogen phase). At any point in time approximately 85% of one’s hair is in the growth phase. Each hair’s growth period may last several years at the end of which it enters its transitional stage where the hair follicle detaches itself from its blood supply. As the follicle atrophies a new follicle is formed and the complete cycle is repeated. Throughout life it’s normal for you to shed about 100 hairs per day.
To promote healthy hair you should maintain:
» A well balanced high-nutritional diet. Nutritional supplements with B6 and high doses of Omega-3 fatty acids are also recommended. » A balanced life where high stress levels are avoided or mitigated my stress-relieving programs, such as:
√ An appropriate physical exercise regime
√ Time-out relaxing
√ Requesting assistance or delegating appropriate portions of overburdening workloads to others (see Ch B21 reduce your stress level)
Although the above suggestions may enhance the appearance of our hair, our hair still remains strongly influenced by heredity. Some experts claim that with the passage of time the heredity factor accounts for up to 95% of the hair’s vitality and longevity. This is clearly seen among young men, who are otherwise perfectly fit and healthy, but succumb to male-pattern baldness (Androgenetic alopecia) while they are still in their early 20’s.
After centuries of snake oil salesman offering amazing hair restorative elixirs, all guaranteed to promote, almost overnight, strong healthy hair regrowth – now there is a glimmer of realistic hope with the FDA recently approving its first, scientifically proven, hair restorative treatment in the form of topically applied Minoxidil which retails internationally under the brand name Rogaine ®.
